As League One clubs and fans alike await their fate in the twisted points per game or play out the season debate, League Two fans are more fortunate; we have corroboration.
The Sky Bet League Two season will be decided on a points per game ratio, with Stevenage being relegated as the rock bottom club on a measly 22 points from 36 games and Crewe Alexandra, Swindon Town and Plymouth Argyle all being granted promotion, but of course this could change if League One teams vote to deem the 2019/20 season null and void, however there is more chance of Southend United actually winning a game than that happening (so very unlikely).
With that being said, England's fourth tier has wrapped up, but which players have demonstrated their capabilities across this season, and which deserve to have their name in the mix for the League Two Team of the Season?
(GK) Alex Palmer- Plymouth Argyle
Certainly not the last Plymouth man to feature in this eleven, Palmer has been an influential member of the Argyle squad in his first season in Devon. The shot stopper is currently on loan from Championship runners-up West Bromwich Albion, but has shown the quality to challenge at a higher level than League Two next season. Palmer achieved the league's golden glove, having the most clean sheets in the league by 14 and saving an excellent 37.8% of attempts that come his way, and has been a key member in Plymouth's title challenge.
(RB) Perry Ng- Crewe Alexandra
Perry Tian Hee Ng (yes, that is his name) has been one of the best players in the league this season without a shadow of doubt. His reliable, strong perfomances from right-back have caused the youngster to be linked with the likes of Nottingham Forest and Derby County, even being named as Matty Cash's replacement as Forest's right-back continues to be linked with big money moves such as West Ham United and even AC Milan. Ng was named club captain at the age of just 23 at the start of the season having progressed from the club's youth academy setup and winning the player's player of the season last season, and has brilliantly adapted from the role, being a huge reason for the stability and structure to the Alex back line which has been pivotal in their promotion season.
(CB) Charlie Goode- Northampton Town
Whilst the Cobblers start to the season may have been a tad shaky, they certainly came out of their shell and mounted a successful play-off push. A large reason for this was their solidified defence, with goalkeeper David Cornell and Goode standing out as the crucial players in a fantastic season. Goode made 35 appearances so far this season, netting three goals from defence, and never once looked like a liability and was constantly consistent under Keith Curle. The best news for Northampton fans is that Goode is contracted for another season at Sixfields, so it would either take a large amount to pry him away from the club or he'll spend another season being 'goode' in the East Midlands.
(CB) Farrend Rawson- Forest Green Rovers
The former Derby County defender has had an excellent season at the Vegan side, after consistently performing week in week out despite the Grecians steady decline down the League Two table. From originally challenging for the Sky Bet League Two title, Forest Green eventually had to settle for a mediocre mid-table finish, but Rawson continued to rally the troopers, stating in interviews that he had full confidence in his team-mates to sort out their poor form and mount a late play-off push, before the coronavirus denied any chance of that. Rawson's been linked with moves up the leagues, with Sunderland supposedly interested in the 23 year old due to his premium form this season. Despite Forest Green having one of the youngest squads in the league, Rawson has acted as an influential and experienced defender amongst less qualified youngsters, despite being just 23.
(LB) Chris Hussey- Cheltenham Town
Probably the hardest decision so far, Chris Hussey and Connor Wood have both had exceptional campaigns. However, whilst they both have six assists each, Hussey has also nabbed himself a goal and done so in two less appearances than Wood, so it appears as if he is the more suitable contender for the Team of the Season. Hussey has been a fantastic addition to the Cheltenham play-off season, helping the Robins to defy the odds in what has been a brilliant season.
(RM) Bez Lubala- Crawley Town
The former Birmingham City winger has flourished in his first season at the Peninsula Stadium, having scored 12 goals and 3 assists in 34 Sky Bet League Two games. Whilst Crawley haven't had too great of a season, Lubala has been the one shining grace in that red devils side that saw Gabriele Ciofi replaced by John Yems in December, using his pace and power to act as a constant threat home and away with mesmerising skill and technique. Lubala is also the highest scoring winger in the divison and therefore was gaining Premier League interest back in January for his performances. I was also convinced by Cheltenham Town's Ryan Broom, who has grabbed himself 8 goals and 6 assists in 34 games.
(CM) Antoni Sarcevic- Plymouth Argyle
Debatably the most consistent and influential central midfielder in the league, Sarcevic has followed Plymouth Argyle from League One to League Two and has rose to the occasion for the Pilgrims. The Englishman has scored 10 goals and got 6 assists in 31 games, and acted as the utility man for Plymouth, the one to pick it up from the defence, break apart the midfield with his movement and switch that defence to attack, which explains so many of his goal contributions in this past season.
(CM) Josh Wright- Leyton Orient
Looking at other pundits and who they are favouring for the Team of the Season, I have seen nobody mention Wright's name. But the brother of Mark Wright has come over two huge mental barriers this season, trying to rectify his torture of a season he endured last season with Bradford City as he went from captaincy to not even training with the first team, and the passing of his new manager Justin Edinburgh, who Wright held a close relationship with and had been the last signing before the tragedy. Wright has not only fulfilled the trust Edinburgh has put in him, he has helped the O's to regain stability in the league after coming up from the National League, clincing eight goals and four assists in the league.
(LM) Charlie Kirk- Crewe Alexandra
Questionably the hardest decision on this team, Kirk and Exeter City's Randell Williams have been neck and neck all season; not just at two promotion challenging clubs, but at the top assists. Both have achieved an exceptional 14 assists each, however Williams has played one more game than Kirk and the Alex winger has disposed 7 goals compared to Willams' 5. Like Ng, Kirk is also a product of the proven Crewe youth academy which consistently produces talents like captain Ng and the clinical Kirk.
(ST) Ollie Palmer- Crawley Town
The Red Devils target man has been excellent this season, getting himself an exceptional 13 goals and 3 assist in 2088 minutes of football. Palmer also nets himself a goal once every 161 minutes, which is the second best behind Swindon's Eoin Doyle, showing his clincial behaviour, bullying the defenders off the ball with brutal strength and handy height, whilst also linking up with Lubala, as the duo really have been underrated for Crawley this season. However, Nicky Maynard is unlucky to miss out as the second top scorer in the league behind the prolific Doyle, as he got 14 goals and 2 assists but played more games than Palmer.
(ST) Eoin Doyle- Swindon Town
As a Bradford City fan, it pains me to say it, Doyle shouldn't just be in the Team of the Season, but deserves to be the Player of the Season. At one point, the Irishman was the top scorer in all of Europe, and managed to fend off the conflict of the Bradford City-Swindon Town derby, which somehow became the Doyle Derby, to secure his future at the County Ground and devote himself to the Robins. The Swindon hitman grasped 25 goals and 4 assists, netting one every 120 minutes (just think about that for a minute) and clearly being a pivotal reason for Swindon's deserved promotion.
