EXCLUSIVE: Lamin Jagne on Morecambe FC, Jim Bentley and his future

Morecambe FC have time and time again defied the odds by surviving in the Sky Bet League Two, despite brushing against relegation to the pits of non-league football.

One notable praise surrounding the Shrimps is their insistence on bringing through their youth academy players, with the likes of Carlos Mendes Gomes and club captain Sam Lavelle all impressing this season. They also have a number of prospects coming through such as Michael Howard, Ibrahim Bakare and Lamin Jagne who all have bright futures ahead of themselves and will be eager to impress Derek Adams for the upcoming 2020/21 campaign.

One man who broke through into the first team last season was midfielder Jagne, but an injury halted opportunities for the English-Gambian youngster.

Jagne praised Morecambe, saying: "It's great because the club gave myself and Carlos [Mendes Gomes] an opportunity to live our childhood dreams as professional footballers.

"When we both signed we got the same opportunity as the rest of the squad and we took it, especially for Carlos now he's doing very well.

"I got my chance as well before I got injured last season, it was a big set back but I am looking to make things right and kick on."

The man who gave Jagne his chance was former Shrimps boss Jim Bentley, who ended his 17 years at the Globe Arena: "He was a big part of my development as a footballer he trusted me as a person and footballer. He believed in me when others didn't and so for that I will be forever grateful.

"People often talk about how he's the nicest man in football but for me personally he is one of the most nicest and caring people I've met in my life.

"It was always going to be different when he left because of how long he's been there and how admired he was by everyone at the club and for the fans it was very emotional.

"But when the new manager came in there was a job to be done so we had to try and move on and be quick to adapt."

Bentley quit Morecambe for AFC Fylde back in October but has struggled to find form with the coasters since his emotional switch: "He has a way of working and it won't take him long to start getting results like he did at Morecambe for so many years."

One of Bentley's several improvements made at the club was making former Blackburn defender Lavelle captain, who Jagne commended: "He's a big character around the training ground , he's liked by everyone and when it's time to be serious and get the job done he is always ready.

"He's also a good leader and helps people when it is needed."

Midfielder Jagne continued to elaborate on his future and confirmed his excitement for the football season to get back underway: "I am very excited. I miss going to training every day and the days are very long at the moment without football. So hopefully it'll get back underway very soon and am looking forward to where I end up next season and getting back to where I was before my injury, feeling good.

"As a footballer I've had a lot of set backs for different reasons but I still believe in my abilities.

"I learned a lot since I have been at Morecambe and I know what I need to do to progress. I believe I have what it takes to play at a higher level."
